alma mater society

The Alma Mater Society is an entirely student-run corporation that oversees the spending of your student fees. It has a multi-million dollar budget that funds clubs, campus programs, representation to university administration, and campus bars and businesses.Homecoming Football

It has, in the opinions of some, something of a reputation of being cliquish. The skeptical viewpoint is as follows: each year, the student body elects a three-person executive (President, VP (operations) and VP (university affairs)). These folks hire all their friends as commissioners who in turn hire their friends as managers/employees, and so on. The student government of 2005-2006 focused particularly on “Cracking the Clique”- which was meant to remedy the above skepticism.

There are a number of areas where students can get involved, in paid or volunteer positions. Applications for first years usually surface in September. Other hiring takes place in March. There are positions available for first year interns who assist commissioners and members of the executive.

The commissions under which students may get jobs are as follows;

Internal Affairs
Municipal Affairs
Academic Affairs
Campus Activities
Social Issues

Hiring and membership for most clubs takes place under the auspices of the AMS.
