The Libraries

The libraries will often hire people (often those demonstrating financial need) to reshelf books and man the circulation desk. Library jobs pay well (around $10 per hour) and have very reasonable hours. Part time is usually what’s available.

Tour Guides

The Office of Student Recruitment hires hundreds of people to act as tour guides on campus. This is an exciting, entertaining, and coveted job. Not only do you take prospective students on tours of the campus, but you also get to help inform them about the university - you essentially help shape their vision of the school. The pay is decent, around $10 to start, and there is a great opportunity to work as a recruiter for the university once you are done school.

Departmental Jobs

Keep your ears open and eyes peeled for jobs offered through various departments on campus. Oftentimes there will be openings for assistants to carry out office work (such as at Film House) or set up lectures/electronics for profs before class. Some positions in the Art History department pay as high $20 an hour ... not too shabby!

Campus Services

The Common Ground, Destinations, P&CC, Tricolour Market, Alfies, Clark, QP and the Tea Room are all entirely student run, and hire in March- rarely in the fall. The pay is moderate for many of these jobs, however don’t expect good tips- students are painfully cheap. Above all, these jobs, and for the most part the people you work with, are tons of fun.

Work Study

Starting in mid summer, students can apply for work study jobs. These jobs rule, mainly because you get great experience (often in your field of study) and the pay is decent. They are always more than flexible with your hours, so you can easily schedule your work in between classes or hangovers.

Office of Advancement

This job sucked my will to live. While the perks are good (decent pay, free pizza, prizes) you are a call center bitch, calling alumni and asking for money. It wasn't so bad when I was calling Law School grads from the 70s, but imagine calling some guy who graduated two months ago and asking for cash. Anyway, some people love this kind of environment, and the perks are good if you work hard. They give away prizes like free Goodlife passes or Movie coupons for star performers.
