coolest clubs

If there wasn't enough partying, studying, socializing, working, exercising, eating, sleeping, or bathing to keep you occupied, then you clearly haven't joined enough clubs. Queen's has more clubs per student than any other university in Canada, and most of them are very worthwhile. During the first few weeks of school there is a 'Clubs Night' where all the clubs run booths to let you know what they are all about. Below we've listed a few of the best.coming Football

Queen’s Bands

Well-populated, well-dressed (well, this is up for debate) and well-funded, Queen’s Bands is one of, if not the most, vibrant clubs on campus. One will often hear the bands marching down the street on football game days in bright red jackets and tartans (yes, you get to wear a kilt). The bands have a long history and their practices are embedded in tradition. Students can join the pipe band, brass band, highland dancers or the Co-ed cheerleading squad (male cheerleaders actually do pretty well for themselves). It’s a good thing if you can play an instrument, but this is not mandatory- the most important thing is to be spirited. The question is not “Can you play it well?” it’s “Can you play it loud?”

Studio Q

Some say this is one of the best clubs on campus- and it’s campus media- if not, then it’s at least your best bet if you want to be on TV. Studio Q is a weekly campus television show that features comedy sketches and campus events in a humourous news format. The ability to act is not a prerequisite- you basically need to be able to breathe, talk and make facial expressions (and maybe not even that) to qualify for this show. Volunteers can also do behind-the-scenes stuff like editing or writing. Check out www.studioq.tv to get an idea. Shows air during the school year at midnight, Sunday on CKWS.

Beer Appreciation Club

There’s really no explanation necessary for this one. It’s one of the more popular clubs on campus; however bear in mind that this is not because members can go out and get hammered- they seriously appreciate well-made beers. Membership comes with a fee, which includes some brewery tours and samplings. Members can also participate in a sampling course through QCollege.

QPID

The Queen’s Project on International Development focuses on educating Queen’s students on development issues. The club meets weekly, and meetings often feature speakers. QPID has initiated a number of projects locally and internationally with the intent to raise the quality of life of those who live in underdeveloped regions. Members have the opportunity to participate abroad in QPID initiatives, or locally in fundraising events. We were particularly fond of past years’ Valentine’s Day candy pouches with vicious valentines attached.

The Degrassi Club

The Degrassi Club was founded in 2001 by a bunch of Degrass Jr. High aficionados. Interestingly, the club is still going strong, with weekly viewing nights of Degrassi Programs and yearly field trips to Toronto to meet cast mates. If there is a secret Degrassi nerd in you, you'll be happy to know that you are not alone.
