greasy spoons

This is not to imply that the following places are in any way greasy- we’re merely listing those restaurants/cafés that conjure up fond memories of days in NYC, stirring coffee with teaspoons alongside breakfasts that would fill you up and clog arteries. We are certain at least, had we ever eaten breakfast in NYC, that this is what it would be like.

Stooley’s Café: The busyness of this place speaks for itself. There are usually crowds at Stooley’s and the place is practically impossible to get into at homecoming as a lot of alumni are fond of it. Service is ok, and if you’re looking to keep things simple- a sandwich or burger- or even something like pasta- and grab a pint at the same time, this is a good place to go. It also has good takeout. The menu also includes some hangover concoctions- whether they work is for you to find out.

JJ’s Good Eats: Located at the corner of University and Johnson, JJ’s is a small restaurant that offers typical diner fare. It is well known for the JJ’s challenge, which entails eating two Pluto burgers (they’re big) and two poutines (bigger) in a set period of time. The successful go on to the finals and have the potential to win cash and fame- the others vomit.

Morrisons: For no nonsense diner fare at rock bottom prices then Morrison's Restaurant on Kingston Street has got you covered. The decor is lacklucker and they make no bones about serving up your grease with a side of attitude, but on a cold winter day their eggs, ham, pancake, and french toast meal always hits the spot.

The Toucan & Kirkpatrick’s: When it’s not serving alcohol, this place is dishing out (on weekends) some of the best, cheapest breakfasts you will ever set your eyes upon. They are quintessential greasy spoon meals and work wonders for hangovers.

Denny’s: There are two Denny’s in Kingston, one near the 401 and another on Gardiners road. Either one has the same food, but what we’ve found is that the Denny’s on Gardiners is the best to visit late at night when you’re drunk (and you have a sober designated driver, of course) the service is great. In the morning, go to the 401 location- it’s big and bright, and the staff is friendly. There is truly no better food for the hungover than greasy hashbrowns. When your stomach stops trembling, you’ll be golden.
