The Garden Street Café: Botterell Hall’s Best Kept Secret

The Garden Street Café, located in the basement of Botterell Hall, is a great alternative to hospital cafeteria food. Sure, it looks like a hospital cafeteria itself – lima bean coloured walls, hairnets aplenty, and industrial furniture from the 1980s abound – but this place has heart.

We’re not exactly sure where this so-called ‘Garden Street’ is exactly. There are no plants nor gardens anywhere near the cafeteria. I can think of few things less garden-like than cinderblock walls and an old grill. That said, the place musters up ample cheer. Where from? I’m not particularly sure. Though I do think that psych wards should take note of the interesting shade of green that smothers the place.

Sodexo runs this cafeteria and the staff are friendly here. On a good day they’ll call you ‘honey’ and they are always happy to dole out extra pickles or double up on your cream cheese serving. While the breakfast specials couldn’t look further from appetizing, they tasted strangely good. Maybe it’s a mixture of a rusty grill and precooked bacon that makes for an extra special early riser. My bagel was burnt and I liked it.

Other ideas:

There is ample seating here, and it’s suprisingly bright for a basement. It’s frequented by famished med students, hungry lifesci keeners, hospital workers looking for a change, and support staff from Queen’s. While it’s not worth venturing out of your way for, it’s the gem of Botterell Hall.

We recommend: The grilled cheese sandwiches are winners. Pair one with a fresh cup of coffee and you’ll be fueled for your rounds or your readings. There are also two microwaves if you wish to smuggle in last night’s pizza.

Location: B1 Level of Botterell Hall, Queen’s Campus, Corner of Stuart & Barrie Streets
Hours: Monday – Thursday: 7am to 3:30pm
Friday: 7am to 3pm
