A serving job can be a lucrative, social and fun summer work experience.
If you arrange it early enough, you’re likely to find a summer job in Kingston. If you wait too long, however, you could be stuck. Trust me, as hustling and bustling as the summer seems, there are more job seekers than jobs.
Service Industry Jobs:
There are a number of places you can work, including on-campus jobs. Coffee Shops and restaurants – or anything tourism related – are likely to be your best bets for employment, as tourists flock to Kingston in the summertime. Whereas campus becomes desolate, the downtown gets very busy- anything restaurant related is likely to give very good tips. Stay closer to the water in your job hunt, that’s where most the toursists head.
On Campus, SWEP or Faculty Jobs:
Certain faculty departments also offer summer paid-internships. This is an excellent way to get to know professors and become a lot more proficient in your own areas of research. SWEP is another great option. Applications begin in second semester, and you should have a decent, program related, $12/hour job lined up well before the summer hits.
Government Opportunities:
Aside from the usual pounding the Kingston pavement approach, which may or may not pay off, look for government opportunities. The Ontario Summer Company program is a great way to get paid by Ontario to start your own small business. You are set up with a local mentor.

I was fortunate enough to have a few great jobs during my years at Queen’s. I worked at Pan Chancho in both the cafe and as a server, and found that it was a rewarding and fun place to work. Any summer job with the prospect of “tips” is a bonus and if you are paying your way through school – a necessity! If I were to do my years at Queen’s all over again I would spend all my summers working in the service industry, meeting people, saving money, and having fun! You can earn the all important work experience during the school year.
