things to do
When you’re not engaged in the various club activities, studies, and partying that come as a part of student life, there may be times when you find yourself bored and in need of distraction. We’ve thrown a few suggestions down below.
Penitentiary Museum
As creepy as it sounds, the Canadian Penitentiary Museum- down King St. West- is a fun way to spend a Sunday morning after a night of heavy drinking. The various handcrafted shivs and shanks are enough to get any improvisational weapon designer excited.
Rollerblade
Rollerblading is a popular pastime for many students when the weather allows you to spend long periods of time outside. Kingston has a lot of scenic routes that are worth checking out. Rollerblading along King St. is a worthwhile way to spend time and get some exercise. Additionally, there is a great bike path that runs along the water.
The P.E.C.
The Physical Education Centre is a dungeon with gym equipment in it. Some of the weight machines look like antiquated torture devices, although they are lacking rust. That said, if you want to get fit, go here- it’s free with your student card, and serves its purpose- even if there are no windows. Busiest times include early morning and just before dinner after 5:30 classes end. Be prepared for a line up at the elliptical running machines.
ASUS Movie Theatre
If you don’t want to shell out the dough for a real movie theatre experience, go to the ASUS movie theatre on Sunday evening at Dunning Hall. ASUS plays relatively recent films, and charges significantly less than your average theatre. Good way to kill a Sunday night.
Fort Henry
In the mood for some history? Visit Fort Henry across the causeway. You can also check out RMC.
Eat
There are hundreds of restaurants in Kingston. Eat something, anything. You may not even have to leave the comfort (or lack thereof) of your ghetto house if you order delivery.
Sit on Porch
Many people do just that- sit on their porches and watch people go by. A beer in hand is not a bad idea. Some people, sadly, do not have porches, in which case they can only find someone else’s porch to sit on.
Shop for REAL books
After a few months of textbooks, textbooks, and blogs, your body will start craving a real book. Okay fine, maybe it's the newest Sophie Kinsella novel (ew) or a trashy Dean Kootnz, but reading something for pleasure is well worth your time. Visit Wayfarer books on Princess for some interesting and cheap used books (say hllo to Walter, the funny old man who runs the place) or waste the day away in Indigo, sipping a latte and figuring out how to feng shui the heck out of your dorm room.
Clean Your House
People do not do this often enough! |
